Why do I feel someone in a few days will find you madly using a peeler on carrots, potatoes, and whatever else you can get your hands on. You will just be sitting in a empty apartment surrounded by shavings rambling about how it needs to be "more sharp and pointy". I say this with love as I have a few collections myself but I don't know if I have felt so deeply for them as you have for your sharpeners. Maybe I need to find something to collect that I do connect with like you do? Hmm, either way, I hope you and your collection arrive at your new place safe and sound.
What collections do you cultivate and what was the initial impetus to start the collections? I think the beautiful thing about personal collections in general is that they usually seem to start from something random or without deep feeling and somehow morph into something important.
Now that you mention it, everything could stand to be a bit more sharp and pointy around here...
I have many collections and while I don't want to bore with explaining all of them I find myself thinking upon my tiki mug collection. It is still packed up and waiting to add color and life to a room. The start was my learning of tiki pop culture and weirdly enough from a friend taking me to a bar at Disney world of all places. That got me interested and I started learning more about tiki pop culture. Then COVID hit and these bars were all hurting and in trouble of going under and a lot of them were just trying to make sure there staff were getting money. A lot started selling their mugs online which wasn't really done a lot before. What I enjoyed about these mugs is the creativity and wild designs each place would do. They would all have their own theme though there are designs that are common and used by many. The individuality and character are what drive me to collect them. Before it was helping a community in need and it became a treasured gift I purchase myself for making a journey to these bars. Adding memories to these artistic cups makes the collection even more important to me.
Nothing I appreciate more than a controlled obsession. Your collection and connection to it are beautiful. I had a professor who had a Bakelite Scottie Dog sharpener that I coveted to the point of considering swiping it for my own. I resisted (which truthfully is out of character for me - I must have really liked this particular teacher), but I do think about it from time to time. I would love to see the second book of sharpeners. In the meantime, I’ll keep my eye open for worthy additions to your collection. I hope these delightful glimpses into your days do not become a hassle for you to write, because they are wonderful.
Thank you so much, Alicia. I'm glad you are enjoying the posts. And while I can't post them as regularly as social media, I really have enjoyed working on them so I don't think you need to fear.
I have a Bakelite Scottie Dog sharpener that was given to me! Even though it doesn't quite fit into my collection, I really do like it and enjoy it. Do you still like this professor? You'd never be suspected at this point. Just saying...
Your drawings of the sharpeners are impressive! I think the luddite in me has a fascination for the sharpeners, and now, good pencils. I bet you have some Blackwing pencils in your possession...
